Where Can I Buy English Books & Magazines?

Luckily for us, Frankfurt has a large population of native English speakers, so finding English books is rather easy. One can always find reading material out at the airport or at the train station, but it isn't the same as wandering around a nice bookstore. If you just want an English newspaper, many kiosks in town will have them available.

Hugendubel is the largest bookstore in town and includes a nice cafe on the lower level where you can sit, read and drink your cappuccino while enjoying a brownie or muffin. The English section is located at the street level and has its own entrance, but is also connected with the rest of the store. They offer a fairly wide assortment and include popular magazines too. If you do not see what you want, they can order if for you and it will often be there the next day at no extra charge. Steinweg 12, (069) 01801-484484 www.hugendubel.de

If you want a bargain, you can also look in Oxfams as they often have English books here. Located just a block from the Zeil, and around the corner from the Klein Markt Halle, they are easy to reach. Töngesgasse 35

The large department stores, Galleria Kaufhof or Karstadt will also have a small selection of books.

If you live in Frankfurt, I suggest getting a library card, as the libraries have a goodly number of English books to choose from. The main city library is on  the corner of Hasengasse and Töngesgasse, across from the Klein Markt Halle and 1 block from the Zeil walking towards the Dom.

For the ultimate experience though, make plans to visit the Frankfurt Book Fair in October on the last day and go to the English hall. This is a book lovers dream come true. Outside of the Festhalle you will find sellers of used books and they always have some English books for sale. These sellers are there every day of the fair.

I went to the British Bookstore website and it says nothing about the store closing. Is this happening fairly soon in further in the year?

I stopped by the British Book Shop yesterday. They are closing on 12 Feb. I mentioned to the woman working there that there was nothing on the website about them closing and she agreed that there should be something posted.
