Frankfurt Museum of Applied Arts

The Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt or as it is called in German, Kunsthandwerk Museum, is a fairly large museum attached to the Metzlar Villa which was built in 1877. It has a wide array of interesting objects and exhibits. I find the name - Applied Arts, doesn't sound exciting, but the collections inside are marvelous.

The different rooms cover various time periods and cultures going back 5000 years. There is an Oriental room, an Islamic room, a Western Europe room, and so on. Objects made of ivory, silver, porcelain, or glass, and beautifully carved tables and cabinets will surely make you go ooh and ahh. Some of the rooms deal with modern objects and are sorted into time periods. For those of us who grew up in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, this will bring back fond memories.

A visit to the Villa Metzlar, next door is accessed by a walkway on the 2nd floor. Built in 1804, the villa has been. wonderfully renovated with some of the coolest wallpaper I have ever seen. Containing unique and creative furniture in each room, this house is very pleasing to the eyes.

I would allow several hours at least to view this museum. The Featured Exhibitions, the opening hours and prices are on the website, which is in English. It is also air-conditioned which is a relief on hot days in Frankfurt.
