Frankfurt Zoo

The Zoo in Frankfurt is not only extremely popular, it is also one of the oldest zoos in Europe and the 2nd oldest in Germany, first opening in 1858. After the war, it was decided that the Zoo was too small for elephants, so they were all moved to the Opel Zoo, near Kronberg. Today, it has around 5,000 animals of 500 different species. They have worked extensively to build more natural habitats for the animals and it is a pleasant place to spend the afternoon.

One of the most interesting buildings, is the Exotarium with its' insect section. It is fascinating watching the bees work, or trying to find the "walking sticks" among the branches in their habitat, or the cool creepiness of the spiders. If you have brave children, they might enjoy the snake feeding days. Another good building is the bird aviary with free flying birds or the Night House with all of the nocturnal animals. Of course, the seals seem to win a lot of attention, and it is fun to go underground and watch them swimming under water. The giraffes are very popular and they always seem to have a baby each year. The primate house, like in every Zoo, is always interesting for just about anyone in the family.

The season is determined from when they change the clocks in fall and spring.

5 € - Children 6 to 17 & students with ID. Kids under 6 are Free
25 € - Family card (2 adults, all kids)

If you have a Frankfurt Card, entrance fee for adults is 5 €

How to get there? Take the U-6 or U-7 from the Hauptwache or Konstablerwache and get off at the Zoo stop. Or take the Tram # 14 which stops in front of the zoo. If it is a nice day, you can easily walk there from the Konstablerwache if you go straight down the Zeil, staying on that street until it runs into the Zoo. Takes about 10 min.
